James suffered from severe spinal damage beyond western healing, leading to extreme depression and suicidal ideation. After his wife divorced him and he lost his job, he was on heavy narcotic medications (120mg oxy, 120-180mg morphine, plus valium). On November 2, 2006, he intentionally overdosed by taking his entire daily pill bottle. He called 911 and during the ambulance ride went into full cardiac arrest. He experienced an out-of-body perspective, watching from above as technicians worked on his body. He saw them push a tube down his throat and observed the scene from approximately 300 feet above. The experience included profound peace and understanding, feeling that everything was perfect and connected. He came back feeling like being dumped in ice water and spent time in cardiac care before being released.
