Debra experienced an NDE in August 1973 following complications from being hit by a car. After initial hospitalization, she was staying at her parents' home for recovery when she experienced severe nausea and passed out. She was suffering from internal bleeding due to a tubal pregnancy, arriving at the hospital with only one pint of blood remaining in her body.
During her NDE, Debra entered a dark space that felt large rather than tunnel-like. Her deceased father-in-law, whom she had never met in life but whose funeral she attended, met her and held her hand. She felt other presences but couldn't distinguish them. At the end of the darkness, she saw a mountain with extraordinarily beautiful light behind it. She felt overwhelming peace, relief from all responsibilities, and certainty that everything would be okay. Despite hearing her family's panic and calls for an ambulance, she felt no desire to return, knowing they would be fine.
