In June 1985, Floyd was free diving through lava tubes in Hawaii when he took a wrong turn and became trapped in an underwater cavern. He was underwater for approximately 15 minutes before being pulled out by another diver and resuscitated by a bystander, with several friends and strangers witnessing the event. After initial panic and fear, he experienced euphoria, peace, calmness, contentment, and warmth - describing it as the best experience he ever had. He saw what appeared like a forest of trees at close distance in thick fog, with bright white light shining from behind creating shadows and beams of light. His thoughts accelerated incredibly fast, and he experienced his past flashing before him. He strongly felt it wasn't his time to go, that he still had something to complete - which he believes may have been having his son six years later. He made a conscious decision to return to life. The experience left him with no fear of death and a sense of purpose.
