In Spring 1964, Don had undergone a tonsillectomy two weeks prior and broke a stitch while playing vigorously, causing him to lose significant blood overnight by continually swallowing it. After regurgitating blood in the morning, he was rushed to the hospital. While being wheeled to his room in a wheelchair, he slumped and his consciousness lifted out of his body, floating at ceiling level. He could see the thoughts of both the nurse (who feared being fired) and his mother (who worried what people would think). He felt curled up and much better than in his body. He encountered loving beings with a main being who communicated telepathically. They showed him the history of the planet and other secrets he immediately forgot as told. The beings said he could stay and rest but wasn't finished, explaining that staying meant returning in another body eventually. He chose to return, re-entering his body like putting on stiff old clothes, experiencing pain upon return.
