Dixie E experienced cardiac and respiratory arrest from an allergic reaction to cleaning chemicals (ammonia and Pledge) in Spring 1982. After cleaning a church in Connecticut for a conference, he felt dizzy while driving and pulled over. An elderly woman found him appearing dead in his car and he was taken by stretcher to the emergency room. The medical team resuscitated him using defibrillation, with a registered nurse later confirming "we just started you back up."
During his clinical death, he initially experienced what seemed partially real - two large men in white (likely attendants) in a white room with a doctor asking extensive questions about his childhood. Behind the doctor's head appeared a large reel of film that was pulled out by a hand from the left, showing negative images of his entire life. When he yelled "NO," he found himself standing in the emergency room doorway, observing the medical team working on a woman he didn't recognize as himself. He felt disconnected from the body and asked a nurse if he should go to the waiting room. While walking down the hall, he became frightened when his shoulder passed partway through the wall. Suddenly he was transported to a peaceful scene - attached to his feet looking down at a rocky stream with a canopy of trees overhead. The trees seemed sentient and encouraging him to "go." He said "NO" again and experienced falling backwards into his body like diving off a diving board in reverse.
