Diane S experienced clinical death following an accident in 1959, awakening naked and paralyzed in the hospital morgue. When her brother-in-law asked "Do dead people cry?" and a nurse saw her tears, saying "Oh, my God," she was rushed to intensive care. During her death state, she experienced herself as a "smoky being" inside her body that gradually curled up from her feet through her body into her head. With a sudden pop, she exited her body and found herself floating above it, able to observe from an elevated perspective.
From outside her body, she could move through walls and observed her mother, sister, and brother-in-law in the corridor discussing whether to stay at the hospital. Her sister questioned if they should stay, her brother-in-law deferred to their wishes, and her mother expressed dislike of hospitals. Moving around the corner to explore, she found a seating area but became nervous about being away from her body. Upon returning to the room, she was amazed to find her body talking to two police officers, describing an accident completely different from the one she had experienced. She noticed a brilliant light outside the window where previously she had seen a parking lot. Thinking "I am not ready to go," she immediately found herself back inside her head as the smoky being slowly unraveled throughout her body.
