Diane N experienced cardiac arrest during a tilt table test in February 1995 while being evaluated for symptoms of lightheadedness. During the medical procedure, she was strapped to a stretcher with electrodes monitoring her heart, with blood pressure readings taken at regular intervals. The stretcher was raised vertically for monitoring when at the seven-minute mark, she felt strange and announced she was going to pass out. As blackness engulfed her and staff said "she's going out," her heart stopped twice in the time it took to lower the stretcher flat.
During her cardiac arrest, she found herself in a wonderful meadow with brilliant light, warmth, and beautiful flowers. The colors seemed more vivid and everything appeared brighter than normal. She experienced profound feelings of love, peace, happiness and safety in this realm. She saw forms or beings but could not make out faces. Her time perception altered as everything seemed to happen at once. She felt incredible joy and a sense of unity with the world, sensing she had gained understanding about the universe. Upon returning, she had difficulty breathing and felt sick to her stomach. She later learned the full extent of her medical crisis - that her heart had stopped twice during the test. This experience transformed her relationship with death, removing all fear. She became more involved with her Methodist church and now celebrates people's deaths as their reunion with Jesus and God rather than feeling sad.
