David L experienced a near-drowning in June 1987 while swimming with a friend. Playing like scuba divers with a large raft, David went underwater and his face mask came off. The chlorine burned his eyes, causing him to surface with eyes closed, not realizing the raft was above him. He gasped and inhaled water, becoming trapped under the raft. After thrashing in panic, his strength vanished and he sank to the bottom. His body convulsed seeking oxygen, then went still. In darkness, he heard his heartbeat slowing and prayed desperately not to die, crying warm tears underwater. Then bubble-like visions struck him with extreme force - each showing moments when he had been mean or rude to others, but experienced through their eyes, feeling the pain he had caused them. Each vision seemed to last forever and felt progressively worse. He saw his own funeral and felt his loved ones' grief. Understanding this as a mini-judgment, he experienced everything hurtful he had done coming back upon him. Through continued prayer, a feeling of divine love came over him with assurance everything would be alright. God gave him strength to lift his arm, which his friend grabbed, pulling him out and reviving him. The experience taught him the golden rule profoundly.
