Damien, age 16 in 1979, was at a party when a fight broke out between two boys outside. After one boy fled into the house, the aggressor began destroying a fence. When Damien confronted him, he was struck from behind with a plank by an accomplice. Blood poured from his head wound. Suddenly, he found himself floating approximately twelve feet above ground, observing his physical body sitting on the doorstep with head in hands. He felt incredibly calm and strangely disinterested in the commotion below. He could see people running and heard shouting, particularly noting the host Liz crying "Damien, not Damien" in distress. He became fascinated by the arched brickwork above the front door and drifted toward it, staring at it while oblivious to events below. Then he was back in his body, feeling blood pumping between his fingers. Friends walked him to the nearby hospital where he received six stitches. Despite the seemingly minor treatment, Damien notes that similar head trauma incidents have been fatal for others. The experience left him without fear of death or afterlife, and triggered a series of lucid flying dreams culminating in consciousness zooming into space.
