During natural childbirth of her third child in 1954 California, Clio experienced a calcium deficiency coma. Her feet went numb, then numbness progressed up her legs and throughout her entire body. The doctor ordered an IV drip but Clio felt nothing despite normally being terrified of needles. Suddenly her mind floated outside her body, stopping above and behind the nurse on her right. She could see the back of the nurse's cap (like a shower cap) and the ties on her gown. The nurse blocked her view of her own face on the delivery table. She felt no fear, only intrigue. The scene began going black like an old TV picture tube contracting to a brilliant dot of light before going dark. She heard someone calling her clearly by her first name - unusual since hospital staff used married names in that era. The voice was comforting with a strange, echoing, hollow sound as if from far away. She felt pulled back and instantly returned to her body with numbness completely gone, delivering a daughter shortly after. She developed ability to induce OBEs for pain management.
