At age six in December 1984, Cameron developed Reye's Syndrome after his mother gave him chewable children's aspirin for a fever. Following medical advice to give more aspirin, his fever reached 106.5°F, requiring emergency hospitalization. He entered a coma with a brain pressure monitoring bolt inserted in his head and was placed on life support. When his mother briefly left for the restroom, his life support dropped to zero.
