Barbara G, at age 5 in autumn 1957, experienced a life-threatening medical crisis when she simultaneously contracted chicken pox, measles, rubella, mumps, and scarlet fever. Her condition was so severe that she received extreme unction (last rites) from a priest. She experienced prolonged fevers, convulsions, and dramatic lesions both internally and externally, with ice baths being administered for the fever.
During her NDE, Barbara became detached from pain and left her body, initially watching from the ceiling corner as her mother and doctor discussed her condition, with the doctor saying "She's going to break out in something" and counseling her mother to call a priest. She then entered what she uniquely described as being like a piece of fruit cocktail going into orange jello, where she could feel and know what all the other pieces of fruit felt and knew in perfect unity. Her primary observation was watching the doctor and her mother from outside her body, seeing herself on the bed while they discussed her grave condition. In the "orange jello" realm, she experienced complete interconnectedness with all beings, feeling overwhelming love both given and received. She heard/felt a voice saying she could choose to stay or return, that both choices were acceptable, and this "orangeness" would always be there for her. Barbara chose to return to be with her mother. The experience left her with lasting psychic sensitivities including predicting a friend would have a baby girl years later, knowing about a cuckoo clock gift before opening it, and experiencing sympathetic symptoms when her brother had poison oak.
