In June 1949, while on a youth group vacation at a lake, Arlene dove from a rowboat into water where seaweed was visible. She became trapped at the bottom, unable to move as the seaweed held her feet. As she ran out of air and stopped breathing, witnesses reported she was gone for five minutes after the bubbles stopped.
During this time, Arlene experienced walking toward a brilliant light through a hole in darkness. She encountered a hooded figure she believed to be St. Peter at what seemed like pearly gates.
