Bess underwent cardiac surgery for congestive heart failure caused by congenital problems associated with Holt-Oram syndrome. She was critically ill and dying, with doctors not confident she would survive the surgery as she was turning blue with erratic breathing during anesthesia. Post-surgery, she had to be re-intubated three times over six weeks and required a balloon pump in her heart. Doctors gave her only 25% chance of survival with high risk of brain damage. While unconscious, she heard herself say "I'm going to die" without being upset. After brief darkness, she saw herself lying in a room full of pleasant golden-white light, possibly through a glass wall. She felt very loved, at peace, and knew she wasn't alone despite not seeing anyone. A gentle male voice told her telepathically "You are going to be alright, you are not going to die." She thought she had died and gone to heaven. The experience was not frightening and brought lasting spiritual changes. She developed enhanced intuition, ESP abilities, and has seen and spoken to angels on several occasions since the experience.
