Arthur was suffering from testicular cancer and undergoing chemotherapy which weakened his body. Due to sleep apnea, he experienced a cessation of breathing during sleep that did not trigger his usual wake response due to the chemo effects. His brain registered "Breathing has stopped. If it does not resume, death will occur." He felt pressure like a balloon filled with air, then profound peace as he realized dying was easy and natural. He sank into what felt like a pool of water that grew dark then extremely bright. An intensely bright object like the sun appeared that didn't hurt to look at and spoke to him in English saying "Hello Arthur. I am so glad to see you." They discussed something from his past he wasn't proud of, and the being showed understanding. When asked if he was ready to die, Arthur said no because he had things to do. The being replied "That's right. You go back and do them. When you are done, come back and see me." Upon return, his arm felt cold and lifeless like deceased person's skin. The peaceful feeling lasted for days afterward, convincing him something extraordinary had occurred.
