Theodore R had been experiencing increasing seizure activity when, during a post-seizure "buzz zone" state of partial consciousness, he took forty 100mg tablets of the antidepressant Elavil in what became a suicide attempt. He was rushed to the hospital emergency room where he lost consciousness and had a near-death experience.
During the experience, Theodore floated above his body and could see the doctors and nurses in his room working on him. As he continued floating away from his body, he noticed increasing calmness and heard soft, gentle sounds he couldn't identify. The further he traveled, the more he heard voices calling him to continue coming. He began seeing shapes of people without distinct faces or genders, all showing him unprecedented love, understanding, and compassion. These beings conveyed total acceptance and love beyond anything he had experienced in life. While immersed in this loving environment, he began hearing another voice telling him to "drink this." Initially resistant, he eventually complied with the persistent voice telling him to drink all of something that tasted horrible. The next thing he remembered was waking up in the hospital, angry that he couldn't stay with those loving beings.
