At age six, Terry M was exploring a construction site with a friend when he experienced vertigo while looking into a rectangular opening to the basement. He fell head-first onto the concrete floor below, fracturing his skull and remaining unconscious for approximately ten minutes. During this time, he experienced what he describes as an "impression of light" that created a complete sense of certainty and knowing that continues to affect him decades later.
While unconscious, Terry found himself encompassed in a realm of light where he was not confined to localized consciousness but experienced an expanded awareness that superseded ordinary understanding. He describes being both surrounded by and unified with this light, experiencing it as his true self rather than something external. After regaining consciousness, Terry was taken home where he gave confused responses to questions about his identity and perception. He spent three days in the hospital for observation, with doctors expressing amazement that he survived the trauma.
