During advanced Hodgkin's disease treatment with radiation therapy in June 1968, R.T.F. experienced a profound near-death experience. While hospitalized, he first perceived his hospital room through the multi-faceted eyes of a spider or fly in the ceiling corner, viewing his own pale, lifeless body on the bed with a prism-like perspective. His essence then floated through a gray fog-like swirling mist and arrived at a massive stone staircase, which he ascended by floating upward.
At the top of the stairs, he encountered a large, ancient oak door. Unable to descend (as this would mean returning to a useless body), he sensed movement behind the dense door. As it opened slightly, his being was inundated with a warm, bright white light accompanied by awareness of eternal and infinite peace. He experienced harmonious music felt rather than heard, and sensed an exquisite natural order beyond any imagined perfection. The door never fully opened but closed abruptly in an authoritative manner. Through a keyhole in the door, he glimpsed the same perfection and became aware of an "admission conference" being conducted. He heard snippets: "A mistake has been made," "It is not yet his time," and "There is work or a mission yet to be completed." His being was crushed to understand he was being returned to his body for a unique purpose. Upon return, he felt intense sadness and grief, experiencing physical emotion and feeling he could "cry enough to fill the oceans." --- Biblical Summary --- Biblical elements: The experience contains several elements consistent with biblical accounts of the afterlife, including an out-of-body experience where consciousness separates from the physical form, ascending to a higher realm via stairs (reminiscent of Jacob's ladder), encountering a door or gate (similar to the "narrow gate" in Matthew 7:13-14), experiencing divine light and perfect peace, and being sent back with a mission to complete. The gray fog or mist as a transitional space differs from biblical descriptions. The absence of explicitly identified divine beings (no mention of God, Jesus, or angels) and the impersonal nature of the "admission conference" lack the personal divine encounters typical in scripture.
