Around 1943, eleven-year-old Richard was playing on a Davis Raft (multiple logs deep) at a wharf when a wave from a passing cargo ship threw him into the ocean. Wearing heavy winter clothing and boots, unable to swim, he sank toward the bottom while looking up at light between the logs. He repeatedly tried surfacing but was trapped beneath the logs that shifted to block his escape. On his third descent, he had an out-of-body experience. First, he witnessed his empty classroom seat while hearing his teacher Mrs. Hall telling the class that Dick wouldn't be coming to school because he had drowned the day before - a precognitive vision of the next day. He then heard beautiful music, noticed fish around him, and saw a bright mystical light. He suddenly popped up between the logs, grabbing hold while calling for help.
