On March 1, 1993, nineteen-year-old Robin gave birth to her daughter after seven hours of excruciating labor. Despite the doctor's instructions not to push, she couldn't resist the urge. After delivery, she tore her cervix and began hemorrhaging, with her blood pressure dropping rapidly ("bottoming out"). The nurse noted she was going into shock and becoming unconscious. Robin then felt complete calm with no pain whatsoever. Without feeling the transition, she found herself standing at the head of her bed, observing herself, the nurse, and doctor. She heard them discussing stitching her cervix to stop the bleeding. She watched the nurse walk to a silver tray and pick up a packet. Though she tried saying "I am awake," her physical lips weren't moving. The nurse opened the packet and placed smelling salts under her nose. Remarkably, Robin smelled it before her body did, then suddenly returned to her body, slapping the nurse's hand away and insisting she had been awake the whole time. The hemorrhaging had stopped and she was stable. When she told the doctor the next day, he simply said "Sometimes that happens."
