On April 4, 2004, Ricky experienced a major heart attack while at the hospital. During the event, he suddenly lost consciousness mid-sentence while medical staff was preparing an IV. He immediately found himself standing at the head of the bed, observing his body and the medical team working on him. He watched as the doctor requested medication and received a large needle from a nurse. Everything then went black, and he found himself in what he describes as a black room or abyss - not frightening but filled with the greatest sense of peace he had ever felt. He sensed something behind him and a black veil in front, preventing him from seeing beyond. After what seemed like minutes, he was returned to his body from the back of his head forward. Upon return, he raised his hand to stop the doctor who was about to use defibrillator paddles at 400 volts. The doctor was amazed that Ricky was conscious while still flat-lined on the monitor. He was stabilized and transferred to another hospital where two stents were placed in his left ventricle.
