Rachel B experienced an NDE in 1973 after suffering a gunshot wound to the chest. She arrived at the emergency room unconscious and within minutes was in shock and dying from multiple bullet fragments throughout her chest, collapsed lung, and excessive blood loss.
Suddenly, Rachel found herself looking down on her body from the upper left corner of the room, observing the crowd of doctors and nurses working to revive her. To her right, she could see a brilliant light coming from behind a door at an indefinite distance. She wanted to go through the door but couldn't because of the medical intervention. She yelled at them repeatedly to "Leave her alone, let her go, stop hurting her!" She no longer identified with the body as herself but as a separate entity. She felt that unless they let that entity die, she couldn't live to go through the door to the light, which was slowly closing. Rachel experienced no pain or fear, with calm emotions but urgency to reach the light before the door closed completely. She could see people from multiple angles simultaneously - from above and at eye level - reading name tags and even smelling their breath. She moved among and through them without touching them, like watching from ten different camera angles. A shock suddenly opened her eyes and she was back in her wounded body in the ICU, feeling terrible loss. The next day, she greeted the surgeon by name and told him he should have let her die. He was amazed she knew his name and more amazed when she described and named the other doctors and technicians. She even described the instrument layout and emergency room configuration.
