Marty, age 9-10, had strep throat that his mother (a nursing student) mistook for flu. His fever reached 104-105°F and he was rushed to the hospital. While on a gurney, just after receiving a penicillin shot, his body went into shock with the high fever. He heard a buzzing noise that grew in pitch while the room began spinning in sync with the sound. He felt his body explode out into another realm of calm, peace and beauty, traveling through a tunnel toward a very bright light at the end. He saw brilliant beings of light and understood without words that he would go no further. He heard the most beautiful, indescribable music. The experience lasted a few seconds before reversing - the buzzing sound lowered, the room spun slower, and he returned to consciousness to find himself in an ice bath to reduce his fever. When he told his mother about the experience, she told him to be quiet and didn't believe him. The experience left him unafraid of death and remains his most vivid childhood memory 35 years later.
