During brain surgery for a 9/10cm aneurysm on the main artery to the brain in June 1997, Valerie experienced clinical death in a controlled simulation to prevent hemorrhage. She followed a figure in a warm golden robe moving upward toward a brilliant light. The figure stood in a stone doorway surrounded by vines, blocking the entrance to the light.
