Maria was only five months old when she experienced severe dehydration and possible coma, leading to what the doctor declared as death. Her family was transporting her when their car broke down in front of a cemetery. Despite being an infant, Maria experienced adult consciousness during her NDE, maintaining full cognitive abilities, sentience, and even a sense of humor - perceiving herself exactly as she would be as an adult.
From outside the car, Maria observed her family's grief - her father and driver in front, her mother and grandmother in back. Her grandmother held a baby wrapped in a black shawl that Maria didn't recognize as herself. She felt everyone's emotions, read their thoughts, but couldn't communicate with them. She found her grandmother's comment about the car dying at a cemetery amusing. Leaving through the car roof by floating, she paused to observe the countryside at dusk - fields in bloom, wet earth, everything emanating beauty and surrounded by pastel-colored auras of light. The golden sun began growing enormous, and Maria felt she could return "home" to her place of origin through it. As she tried to enter this ball of light, a powerful Voice with authority said "NO!" and told her sweetly but firmly that she had to return. When Maria protested that nobody could see or hear her and she didn't know where or how to return, the Presence indicated the baby's body was where she must go back to. She felt enormous pain realizing she would have to return to that "inert, unfeeling, small and asphyxiated" body, knowing she would forget who she truly was. The Voice promised to always be by her side and insisted she return. Hours after being declared dead, she let out a moan when the doctor gave her serum at her father's threatening insistence.
