At age 17, Marsha was standing on a street talking to people in a parked car when she witnessed an approaching vehicle in slow motion. The car hit the parked vehicle, and the bumper caught her behind the knees, flipping her onto her back. She bounced on the back of her head as the car dragged her, stopping just three feet from railroad tracks. It was a hit-and-run incident with the driver never found.
During the traumatic head injury, Marsha experienced her life playing in reverse, going back through all her experiences to the womb. After reaching the beginning of her existence, she experienced what she described as a "star-burst" sensation, feeling almost as if she were in space. The experience had a crystal-clear quality with time seeming to collapse - everything happened simultaneously in a vacuum-like space where there was no sound. Following the life review and space experience, Marsha believed she had gotten up and was walking around, telling the ambulance crew she was okay. However, she actually woke up in the emergency room as they were removing her clothes. The medical staff informed her she had just regained consciousness and had been unconscious the entire time since the accident. Her sense of time was severely distorted - she thought it was two weeks earlier than it actually was. The experience left her profoundly changed. Her mother noticed she wasn't the same person anymore, saying it was like somebody else was inhabiting her body.
