On October 9, 2000, Marci was crushed when a newly constructed structure with a 1.5-ton roof collapsed on her without warning. The structure hit her head first, then a beam struck her left shoulder, shooting her out approximately 10 feet. She immediately found herself outside her body, looking down at it with no emotional attachment, viewing it as merely a vehicle she had used. She determined the body was too injured to return to.
While flying through the air with complete awareness of everything around her, Marci wanted to see her sister Phyllis who had died in 1997 from brain cancer. She knew Phyllis was somewhere to her left and that reaching her would mean not returning. Her father, who had died four months earlier, repeatedly told her "Marci, breathe. Breathe Marci!" His voice was clear though not audibly heard. When urgency entered his voice, a family portrait appeared showing all her living family and friends' faces individually. She then found herself back in her body, consciously directing her breathing by thinking "In, out, in, out!" She had great difficulty breathing due to thoracic injuries. Her husband found her after she returned. It took approximately six months to feel completely reintegrated into her body.
