Lori experienced a severe asthma attack on February 27, 2003, requiring her father to call 911 when she couldn't breathe. The EMT attempted to give her a nebulizer in the ambulance, which she had never seen before and kept pushing away. Her last memory before losing consciousness was the EMT commenting on her St. Louis Rams sweatshirt and her fear they would cut it. She was admitted unconscious directly to the emergency room where the hospital chaplain came to sit with her father, causing him concern. She underwent emergency intubation and was connected to a ventilator in the ICU due to constricted, non-functioning lungs. During her five days of unconsciousness, she had one brief out-of-body experience where she viewed herself from above with the blue ventilator tube in her mouth. No other people were visible during this observation. She briefly awakened once to see her daughter and boyfriend at bedside and tried to motion for pen and paper to share her experience, but staff thought she was trying to remove her IV and restrained her arms. When fully awakened five days later, she noted there were no mirrors where she could have seen the equipment, and the nurse quickly removed the tube before she could see it normally.
--- Biblical Summary --- Biblical elements: The out-of-body experience demonstrates the biblical concept of consciousness existing independently of the physical body, supporting the scriptural teaching of the soul's eternal nature. The calm, peaceful feeling during the experience despite the medical crisis reflects the peace that can come from divine presence during life-threatening situations. The desire to immediately share the experience upon awakening suggests its profound impact and reality. The strengthening of her faith and increased certainty of God's existence following the experience aligns with biblical transformation through divine encounter. Unbiblical elements: None identified. This brief experience contains no reincarnation concepts, occult elements, deceased spirits, or teachings contrary to scripture. No new age philosophies or universal salvation ideas were present.
