On November 23, 2004, Lloyd experienced an allergic reaction to succinylcholine during surgery and died instantly. During his clinical death, he found himself in a dark void resembling space without stars, with a pulsating light in the distance that appeared alive. He was drawn toward and then moved at light speed toward this boundary of transparent light.
Upon passing through into the light, Lloyd was blinded by pure white light comparable to looking into the sun multiplied a million times, yet it did not hurt his eyes. He felt warm, safe, peaceful, and surrounded by pure unconditional love. The light seemed to absorb him as his entire life was shown before him instantaneously. He became emotional and felt ashamed of aspects of his life, but experienced complete love and knew everything was alright. He was certain he was in the presence of God. Lloyd spent a week in intensive care before being strong enough for surgery. He immediately told his son about going into the light and not wanting to return. The experience fundamentally changed his religious beliefs despite having a minor in Bible from Abilene Christian University. He now believes everyone returns to the light/God and that all have lived past lives, concepts that contradict his previous conservative Christian beliefs. He struggles with reconciling these new beliefs with his religious training but feels unable to question the love and power of God he experienced. --- Biblical Summary --- Biblical elements: The experience strongly aligns with biblical descriptions of divine encounters including brilliant divine light, the presence of God, life review with moral awareness, feelings of being in God's presence, and overwhelming divine love and forgiveness. Unbiblical elements: The most problematic element is Lloyd's post-NDE belief in reincarnation and past lives, which directly contradicts biblical teaching about appointed once to die (Hebrews 9:27). His belief in universal salvation (everyone returns to the light) conflicts with biblical teachings about judgment and salvation through Christ. These new beliefs represent a significant departure from orthodox Christian doctrine despite his theological education.
