Juan HCU, inexperienced with ocean swimming, was caught by a wave at Agua Dulce beach on February 28, 1981. Dragged approximately 100 meters from shore, he panicked and began drowning, feeling water entering through his eyes and ears as he lost oxygen. Fighting against death, he thought "What have I done? Why me? I have not lived life yet. I have not sinned. It is not fair." After losing consciousness, lifeguards performed mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and used a resuscitator device for fifteen minutes without response. As they declared him dead and ordered transport to the morgue, Juan could hear them but couldn't move or signal he was alive. He then saw a beautiful bright light illuminating his location. He appeared as an 8-9 year old boy in a white robe. Two groups of Roman soldiers appeared - one in red uniforms, one in blue - fighting over him saying "He belongs to us" and "No, he belongs here." While they argued with swords drawn, Juan took the opportunity to run and escape through a mine-like cave with two exits, taking the left path. This action brought him back to consciousness where he began coughing. Lifeguards called it a miracle, saying "We thought you were dead and were taking you to the morgue."

--- Biblical Summary ---

Biblical elements: The experience contains several biblical parallels: the bright mystical light often associated with divine presence, appearing in white robes (common in biblical visions), and what could be interpreted as spiritual warfare between angels and demons fighting for a soul (the red and blue Roman soldiers). The struggle between two forces over his soul echoes biblical concepts of spiritual battle. His desperate clinging to life and eventual resurrection after being declared dead parallels biblical accounts of miraculous returns to life. The witnesses calling it a "miracle" acknowledges divine intervention.

Unbiblical elements: None explicitly identified. The Roman soldier imagery is unusual but could be symbolic representation of spiritual forces. The self-directed escape (running away) rather than divine deliverance is somewhat atypical for biblical accounts, but doesn't contradict scripture.
