Joe D suffered a massive heart attack on March 14, 2005, at 5pm. Paramedics used defibrillation which improved his breathing slightly. In the emergency room, he flatlined on the cardiac monitor for 44 seconds, triggering a code blue. He was placed in a medically induced coma for three days, awakening on March 17. He developed pneumonia and required triple bypass surgery with a maze operation on March 24, with 50-50 survival odds. Days before surgery, Joe recalled his NDE from the 44-second flatline. Initially experiencing the blackest darkness he'd ever seen, unable to see even an inch ahead, a flash of brilliant white, blue and yellow light suddenly appeared. He found himself in spirit form floating a few feet above vast acres of beautiful flowers in colors he'd never seen before, smelling their wonderful scent.
