In October 1960, after discovering his wife's repeated infidelities and struggling with severe alcoholism, a man attempted suicide using sleeping pills, tranquilizers, and alcohol while his three children slept. After consuming the lethal combination, he saw a dark cloud formation come through the ceiling and engulf him. He moved rapidly through a tunnel toward a light where he encountered a being of incredible beauty radiating love and compassion - a bright white light with silver threads. The being read his thoughts and showed him a depressing pit containing lost souls shuffling aimlessly with heads down. The being explained: "This is a Hell of your own creation. You would have to go back to earth eventually and experience a new life all over again faced with the same difficulties." He was shown a panoramic life review focusing on how his alcoholism affected his children. He saw that if he committed suicide, his children would end up in foster care and all three would become alcoholics. His daughter would marry an abusive alcoholic who would force incestuous relationships on their daughters. Alternatively, if he reformed, all three children would grow up happy and productive. The being said sternly but lovingly: "Your life is not to do with as you please. Did you create yourself, give yourself life? No. Neither can you choose death. I'm not done with you, your work isn't finished, go back and do what you were meant to do." His daughter Nancy found him unconscious and kept him alive until help arrived. The experience ended his alcoholism, led to divorce, and he became a professor and later a pastoral counselor.
