Jim had a hole in his heart between the right and left ventricles, requiring multiple catheterizations from age five at Harper Hospital in Detroit. In June 1959, during a catheterization procedure, he experienced severe pain on a flat steel round table on the upper floor of the hospital. Suddenly, he found himself above the building with no pain, realizing someone was with him. The feeling was wonderful with great love, and he wanted to stay forever. He was told he had to go back. Jim heard the doctor say "Folks we are losing him. Let's bring him back." He observed that he was above the building as daylight was coming up. When transferred to a gurney, he returned to his body but didn't want to be back because of the pain. The following year in June 1960, he had open heart surgery with a heart-lung machine (newly developed at the time). He was the third patient to use it, with the first two not surviving. He had a 50/50 chance of living. During this surgery, he again experienced being with someone who told him he had to go back, though he didn't want to return. He described beautiful feelings of love for all mankind and the world.
