In April 1996, Jasun underwent kidney x-ray testing with dye injection to determine if his kidney was suitable for donation to his brother who had kidney failure. Upon injection of the IVP dye, he experienced a severe allergic reaction. The warm dye tracked directly to his heart, causing immediate cardiac arrest. He became paralyzed, unable to move or speak, though initially conscious. The nurse screamed and activated an emergency code. Medical staff attempted resuscitation with defibrillator paddles twice unsuccessfully. Finally, a doctor climbed onto his body and thrust a large needle directly into his chest, injecting medication that restarted his heart.
During the cardiac arrest, Jasun experienced a profound out-of-body experience. His vision shifted from color to black and white before he found himself outside his body, observing the resuscitation efforts from above.
