In December 1996, subject experienced severe SUV rollover accident after striking dirt berm head-on. Vehicle rolled multiple times causing T7 vertebrae compression fracture and severe chest trauma from seatbelt impact that created bubble in heart sack. The extreme force pushed ribcage nearly against spine.
During rollover, experienced detachment from body with stationary perspective while vehicle spun around - like watching clothes in dryer while standing still. Could clearly hear sounds of metal and dirt with heightened auditory perception. Visual perception showed everything spinning while consciousness remained fixed in space. Complete peace and calm with no pain during experience. Upon vehicle stopping, was "jerked back" into body experiencing severe chest pain from seatbelt trauma. The contrast between peaceful OBE state and painful return was dramatic. Later discovered vertebrae fracture in hospital. Time distortion occurred - what seemed like moments was nearly an hour, with significant gaps in memory during shock state. Experience produced lasting awareness that death is peaceful and painless. Subject certain of consciousness continuing lucidly beyond physical trauma through mechanism beyond simple shock. Material things became less important over months following. Experience was purely observational without theological claims or being encounters. No new age concepts, reincarnation, or unbiblical teachings emerged. Interpretation remains open without contradicting scripture.
