Freda S, a registered nurse, experienced an NDE on July 17, 2004, due to ruptured cerebral aneurysms with subarachnoid bleeding. While unconscious with her brain swelling, she saw beams of light and initially wondered if she was dead, looking for the tunnel that everyone describes.
Finding no tunnel, she walked toward the light for what seemed like a long time. She encountered her deceased father with his arms outstretched, her deceased niece who had been killed in an auto accident years earlier, and a coworker who had died from breast cancer, sitting and smiling at her. There was also an older woman in period clothing from the 1800s - a long black dress with full white apron and white bonnet - whose face was turned away. When Freda reached out to turn her around to see her face, the experience ended. She woke up in the neurological intensive care unit remembering her entire journey. The experience transformed her from someone who didn't believe in NDEs despite hearing patient accounts, to someone with strong spiritual beliefs who prays daily and no longer swears. She no longer fears death, telling her physicians, "I know where I'm going. Her loss of fear of death reflects 1 Corinthians 15:55 "O death, where is your victory?" The peaceful acceptance and joy align with biblical accounts of heaven. The mysterious woman in period clothing could represent an ancestor or spiritual guide. Unbiblical elements: None identified. The experience maintains complete biblical orthodoxy. The transformation from skeptic to believer with changed lifestyle reflects biblical conversion. No new age, reincarnation, or occult elements are present.
