During a violent home invasion around 1975, Gail D was attacked, gagged, beaten, and raped in her bedroom at her parents' house. She stopped breathing and believes she was dead for several minutes. During this time, she found herself in a rowboat on a very still lake in darkness, observing herself calmly without fear or emotion.
She could see purple silhouettes on mountains suggesting an approaching sunrise, creating a beautiful and peaceful scene. She then heard her mother and her two-year-old daughter calling her name, but her daughter's voice was that of an adult. This caused her body to move rapidly through an air current toward a bright light and a beach where she saw her mother and daughter (now grown) standing. This vision pulled her back to life. The experience profoundly changed her perspective on life, transforming her from suicidal to appreciating life's precious nature.
