On January 27, 1996, a college student was skiing in Aspen, Colorado, attempting to impress his girlfriend with his skills when he collided with a pine tree and knocked himself unconscious. He suffered a concussion and was unconscious for thirteen hours. During this time, he found himself floating above his body, observing his girlfriend trying to revive him. He noted blood from a cut on the right side of his face and watched as his girlfriend removed her white furry hat to place under his head as a pillow, which soon turned red with his blood. He followed the ski patrol as they loaded his body and took him down the mountain, then flew ahead to find the ambulance.
