Dr. Ralph H experienced ten cardiac arrests over twenty-four hours following coronary bypass surgery in July 1997. He had developed heart failure, pulmonary edema, and critically low blood pressure. During each arrest requiring defibrillation, he had the same repeating vision. He heard distant bagpipe music coming from what seemed like a PA speaker on the ceiling. The music grew clearer with Irish-sounding melody and singing. As the music filled the room, the physical room faded and he found himself standing fit and strong on a small hill overlooking rolling hills resembling Ireland or Scotland. A small man in kilts walked away playing bagpipes in a meadow below. Ralph was overwhelmed with indescribable emotions of love, peace, contentment, hope, and joy - feeling this was what he had pursued all his life. He wanted to follow the piper but thoughts of his wife and four teenage children held him back. On one occasion he told the man he would "come later." His vision included an ancient stone fence, rolling meadows, and a rocky shoreline with breaking waves. A "being of light" he identified as "The One nailed to the cross" pulled him back through a tunnel toward light where he met his deceased father who said "So, you have again played the fool!" He experienced unspeakable love in the Light which he identified as God, though the source was hidden by a sword. He was surrounded by beings with triangular faces in uttermost happiness before being sent back because his daughter needed him.
