In 1974, David was run over by a boat with the propeller cutting into his right chest. He lost consciousness from blood loss and lack of oxygen halfway to the hospital. He immediately saw the red ambulance lights and street lights while floating at the ceiling inside the ambulance, watching attendants remove him. He then found himself inside a bright white light that he associated with Jesus.
He had a conversation with this being about whether it was his time to go. David expressed that he still had things to do - his wife and kids to raise. The instant the being agreed with him, he popped back into his body and woke up while they were working on him in the emergency room, surprising the medical staff. He also left his body during surgery, observing the doctor using long forceps in his chest saying "Just a minute, I found another one." The nurses later told him he had a big smile on his face when he woke up in the emergency room. The doctor confirmed he was "as dead as a person could be and still live." David describes the experience as loving, warm, and peaceful with no sense of time - "it just was."
