During a 1994 spinal fusion surgery, David's aorta was accidentally severed. He immediately knew he was dead and went up through the wall to the outside where he watched a helicopter land and unload a baby. Overwhelmed with grief about his children, he sobbed asking "who's going to take care of my kids?" A voice he didn't see responded, "Fear not for I will watch over them." A light appeared and he traveled toward it, eager to continue. Near the end he saw glowing people he knew were his deceased grandmother and father. Then suddenly he woke up in recovery, paranoid and insisting something had gone wrong. The doctor initially denied any complications. Six months later, during a checkup, David noticed a staple-like piece of metal on his x-ray. The doctor then admitted they had nearly lost him - his aorta was snipped, he was placed on a heart-lung machine, and it took about ten shocks to restart his heart after prolonged cardiac arrest. David was furious about being lied to, explaining that the deception had made him think he was going crazy. Since then, he has had three heart attacks and carries a marker on his repaired aorta. He now has prophetic dreams that come true quickly and has seen his future death with his son during what appears to be a catastrophic event with "fires coming from the sky."
