In November 1978, Debra was murdered by Andrew Thornton, a major drug dealer and gun runner. After being beaten, tortured, and forced to overdose on cocaine, she experienced clinical death for three days. During this time, she found herself standing before a council of thirteen non-human beings seated in large chairs, surrounded by gray mist. The central being was twice the size of the others. They questioned her telepathically about her life and how she had lived it, expressing displeasure. She felt completely exposed and terrified. They told her she would not remember most of the experience and decided to send her back because "You have to get it right."
Upon returning to her body three days later, she experienced extreme dehydration, with her tongue stuck to the roof of her mouth. Despite severe physical trauma, she heard a voice urgently telling her to leave. As she attempted to escape, she saw two of Thornton's men approaching with what appeared to be a body bag. The voice commanded her to run, and she experienced being supernaturally transported two miles away to safety. She describes the beings as having non-human heads with large, pointed ears, existing in a gray misty environment with no actual light.
