Christine experienced a near-death event on November 1, 1959, during childbirth when she suffered a massive hemorrhage requiring blood transfusion. The persistent bleeding resulted from birth trauma and created a life-threatening situation. During this crisis, she found herself walking in a valley surrounded by white mist. Words came into her mind: "So this is the valley of the shadow..." referring to the biblical Psalm 23.
The environment was filled with brilliant white light, as if the sun was shining behind clouds. The brightness was extremely intense but remarkably, she didn't need to shade her eyes, accepting it as normal. She was unable to see through the mist except for the brilliant light. While walking through this valley with seemingly all the time in the world, she experienced an intense curiosity about her surroundings. Christine then floated into the air and looked down at herself. A "still small voice" in the back of her mind said "we can't have this, there's a little girl I have to get back to." She recognized this voice as herself. She made a conscious decision to return, mentally "folding" into herself and re-entering her body. Throughout the experience, she was never frightened, only intensely curious. She felt incredible peace and pleasantness, and suddenly seemed to understand everything about the universe. Christine has since had other out-of-body experiences, including a second one during the birth of her second daughter. In that experience, she was in a dense forest sitting under a magnificent tree with someone in a dark hooded robe who talked with her. When he placed her hand on the tree bark, she blended with the tree and understood everything. She also developed telepathic communication abilities with her older daughter, being able to communicate "in pictures," though skepticism has since blocked this ability. --- Biblical Summary --- Biblical elements: The reference to "the valley of the shadow" directly quotes Psalm 23:4, showing biblical awareness during the experience. The brilliant white light aligns with biblical descriptions of divine light and glory. The "still small voice" echoes the biblical description of God's voice to Elijah (1 Kings 19:12). The floating/ascending experience parallels biblical accounts of spiritual ascension. The incredible peace reflects the peace that passes understanding described in scripture. The conscious decision to return for her child shows sacrificial love consistent with biblical values. Unbiblical elements: The second experience of blending with a tree and "knowing everything" suggests pantheistic merger with nature rather than biblical distinction between Creator and creation. The telepathic abilities developed afterward, while not explicitly condemned in scripture, are not typical biblical spiritual gifts. The hooded figure in the forest who facilitated the tree-merging experience is ambiguous and could represent non-biblical spiritual teaching.
