Craig was practicing judo in a gymnasium in September 1999 when he experienced a brief but profound near-death experience. During a grappling match with a brown belt named Andy beneath a basketball net, Craig had established the mount position and was positioning for an arm bar. Andy, instead of defending properly, reached up with his long arms, grabbed Craig's uniform lapels, and used his knuckles to apply pressure against Craig's carotid arteries. Craig didn't defend his neck, thinking the choke attempt from an inferior position would be futile.
Suddenly, Craig found himself looking up at the basketball net from what seemed to be the center of the mat. He heard Andy calling "Coach! Coach! Something's wrong here!" Craig wondered if he had broken his neck, as he couldn't feel anything including his own breathing. He thought he must be paralyzed and worried about what they would tell his girlfriend. He experienced panicked thoughts but notably without corresponding panicked feelings - a dissociation between mental and emotional states. Craig then woke up still on top of Andy, staring down at him in the mounted position. Andy explained that Craig's eyes had rolled back in his head and he had gone out for just a few seconds. The coach shouted from across the mat that Craig needed to tap out sooner. They resumed grappling, and this time Craig defended his neck and successfully got the arm bar, making Andy tap out.
