Chuck was swimming in cold ocean water off La Jolla Bird Rock beach in July 1982 when he was caught in a severe rip tide that pulled him out to sea and north rapidly. Despite trying to swim back to shore where his friends were climbing up, he became completely exhausted more than two hundred yards from where he started struggling. Unable to swim, paddle, or stay afloat, he managed one call for help before realizing he was done. His friends were too far away to help.
As he began to drown and ponder the discomfort of drowning in cold water, it initially hurt to swallow water but became tolerable. As waves broke over his head and he resigned to his fate, he suddenly found himself in a brightly lit tunnel. He remained in a watery environment, but the water transformed from freezing and uncomfortable to warm and natural. He was gently deposited on smooth, cement-like pool-side decking in a very bright, warm, tropical but foggy environment. He could not see beyond a few feet but recognized this place as home and knew home was just to the left, somewhere beyond the fog. He understood being on Earth was a mission, not the end-all reason for being, and felt relieved to be home. A small voice behind him began calling his name insistently. He didn't want to acknowledge it, knowing that if he didn't turn around he wouldn't have to go back. Eventually the voice compelled him to turn and face it, and instantly he was back in the cold ocean water struggling for his life. His friend Ted, wearing a wetsuit, had swum several hundred yards to reach him, meaning Chuck had been underwater for over ten minutes. Though angry at being pulled back from home, Chuck somehow regenerated strength to swim back to shore with Ted's encouragement.
