On August 29, 2006, Carmen experienced a heart attack leading to clinical death with cessation of breathing and heart function. This was one of three near-death experiences she had, with previous events in July 1969 and July 1970. Across all three experiences, she encountered consistent elements that profoundly impacted her spiritual understanding and life perspective.
During her experiences, Carmen found herself looking down on her body in the hospital bed from above. She was surrounded by a soft, pale yellow light and experienced serenity with soft music and a sense of great peace. The colors she witnessed were not of the physical world and remain indescribable. She felt herself floating and observed trees that were unlike normal earthly trees. In her most recent experience, she witnessed rolling dunes of reddish and pale yellow extending into the distance, with some dunes displaying peaks, her perspective panning over the scene. Throughout these experiences, she encountered no other entities but was immersed in total peace. The primary observations included the out-of-body view of her physical form in the hospital bed, the unearthly quality of light and colors, the unique characteristics of the otherworldly trees, and the distinctive landscape of rolling dunes. She experienced a tangible sense of evil in the universe as a palpable force, gaining understanding about the nature of good and evil. Despite multiple returns to life, she felt a consistent desire not to return and wondered about the purpose of being repeatedly sent back. --- Biblical Summary --- Biblical elements: The experience contains multiple biblical elements including the out-of-body experience consistent with 2 Corinthians 12, the presence of unearthly light reflecting God's glory, and overwhelming peace that surpasses understanding (Philippians 4:7). The soft music could represent heavenly worship. Her perception of good and evil as tangible forces aligns with the biblical spiritual warfare described in Ephesians 6:12. The otherworldly realm with unique trees might reflect glimpses of paradise or the new creation. Her strengthened faith and rejection of organized religion's limitations while maintaining liberal faith shows spiritual growth. Unbiblical elements: The repeated sending back without clear divine communication or purpose might suggest a more impersonal spiritual mechanism rather than personal divine sovereignty. Her development of higher standards for others and intolerance of lack of goodwill could indicate spiritual pride rather than the patience and forbearance commanded in scripture. However, these are minor concerns that don't fundamentally contradict biblical teaching.
