In January 1979, Cassie experienced severe asthma in a hospital setting that led to respiratory and cardiac arrest. The doctor detected no pulse, and she saw herself fall sideways onto the nurse before losing consciousness. During resuscitation attempts with CPR and defibrillation, Cassie had a remarkable out-of-body experience.
She found herself floating at the top corner of the hospital room, experiencing an amazing feeling of release, happiness, and peace. From this elevated perspective, she observed a crowd of medical personnel performing procedures on her body below, though she felt no concern. She then found herself flying at tremendous speed through the hospital corridors, following above a hospital trolley being rushed toward the intensive care unit. She passed through the ICU window and met the trolley as staff handed over care to the ICU team. Cassie reported specific observations during her experience, including the layout of the hospital with its double-story buildings connected by long corridors, the route from her ward to the ICU in a taller building, and the medical team's actions. She didn't hear sounds during the experience but was aware of events. Upon awakening in the ICU, she remembered the pain from CPR and defibrillation. Medical staff confirmed they had tried for a very long time to restart her heart.
