Barbara was at a friend's pool party participating in a breath-holding competition. While underwater, she became entangled with the pool sweeper cord stuck on the drain and couldn't free herself. Her friends Shelby and Lizzie dove in to help after she signed "HELP" in sign language, but she ran out of air and passed out. She then found herself outside her body watching her friends pull her lifeless form from the pool. She observed Shelby checking for breathing and Sarah crying before being called to dial 911. Barbara then encountered a brilliant white light and traveled through a pure white tunnel.
