TJ, at age three in spring 1974, stubbornly held her breath during an argument until she lost consciousness. Her sister and mother found her unconscious, and when her sister held a mirror under her nose, there was no vapor and no pulse for approximately five minutes. This self-induced loss of consciousness led to a profound near-death experience.
TJ felt her body fall away and hovered near the ceiling, watching her sister and mother place her on a bed. She then felt herself flying upward through what seemed like a dark void rather than a confined tunnel, with a bright light growing closer. She experienced the sensation of spirits ascending and descending at different speeds, similar to Jacob's ladder from the biblical dream. At the edge of the light, she found herself in a large grassy field with trees and a running stream. A low cobblestone wall divided the field, with a dirt path on her side. She heard children laughing and saw them playing with a dotted ball (later identified as a soccer ball, which she had never seen before). A loving voice in her head asked if she knew who these children were, and she suddenly understood they were children who had died young from accidents, abortions, or illness - eternally innocent and joyful. When steps appeared on the wall and she moved to join them, a being of light appeared and told her it wasn't her time and she couldn't return if she crossed. Simultaneously, she saw her sister crying and praying over her body, begging God to send her back. Despite wanting to stay, TJ chose to return to prevent her sister's suffering.
