On February 24, 1982, Rene was driving with two passengers when their car aquaplaned at 43 kph and hit an industrial power pole. She suffered severe injuries including basal area fractures, frontal lobe damage, eye socket fractures, and the steering wheel pierced her throat and thorax. Medical staff pronounced her dead on February 25, but she unexpectedly revived after saying "Don't give me any more drugs." During her NDE, she moved through a dark maelstrom with frightening beings on the sides trying to reach her.
